The Chicago Bears Aren’t That Bad, I Guess, But They’re Still Not That Good
OK, so I was wrong: The Chicago Bears managed to find their way into the Super Bowl vs. the Indianapolis Colts.
Mind you, they had to squeak past the significantly underpowered Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round to get there, and Rex “Deserves All The Abuse He Gets And More” Grossman played awful (73.2 QB rating) against the New Orleans Saints in the conference championship game, in spite of the win; had the Saints gotten their act together in the first half, it would have been a blowout the other way.
All that’s whining and so much water under the bridge now.
Truth is, if Chicago can’t repeat what it did to the Saints — if they can’t overcome offensive mistakes by creating turnovers and spectacular plays on defense — the Colts are going to eat the Bears alive in the Super Bowl.
Mind you, the Bears have the classic championship formula: They can run and they can stop the run (especially if Tank Johnson brings his guns with him to Miami). But Peyton Manning (101 QB rating for the season; 86.7 in the postseason; 75 before the conference championship vs. the New England Patriots; 115.7 against the Pats) is a lot better than his playoff performances tell, and both Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne have had uncharacteristic drops in the playoffs.
If the Indy O and D lines keep up the play they’ve had in the postseason, and the offense gets back into its high-powered form, it’s going to be a disaster for da Bears, and nothing will make me happier.
